William Morris

The Arts and Crafts Movement was started by William Morris in 1860, he was inspired by the work of art critic John Ruskin. He believed that all art was of equal importance. Morris was a designer and a craftsman. He believed that a designer should have a working knowledge of any media he used and he spent much time mastering skills. He taught himself embroidery by unpicking old work and seeing how it was done. The Arts and Crafts movement was a reaction against the Industrial Revolution, looking toward traditional crafts and skills as opposed to machinery run environments.
